About full frame prints

The prints are in general made full frame. This will give as much of the original negative's area as possible - it's the whole picture, so to speak. Well, almost. There is a small amount of film that falls outside the borders of the mask that's used to hold the film in the enlarger. About a millimetre or so.

The proportions of photographic paper and the proportions of negatives are not the same (don't ask me why). The proportions of 35 mm film (24 x 36 mm image area) is 2:3. The proportions of 18 x 24 cm / 7 x 9.5 inches photographic paper is 3:4.

There will be some white all around the actual photo when making full frame prints. More white on the long side of the paper than on the short side of the paper, hence the different proportions.

The illustration gives an idea of how it is. The white is a 18 x 24 cm / 7 x 9.5 inches photographic paper, the grey is the actual photo.
